Five Video Friday

In the spirit of New Years resolutions and all that bull hype, here I am telling myself I'll do better about keeping up with this blog. So here I go...

This week's Five Video Friday, rather than just consisting of whatever videos came through my inbox that I thought were "pretty good," is actually a group of five songs that I think are really GREAT. And there might even be a bit of a theme that ties them together... so I hope you enjoy.

Oh, Tegan and Sara, you get me every time. Every lesbian's favorite Canadian twins are putting out a new record, Heartthrob, on January 29 and if "Closer" is any indication, it's going to be another gem. While their work over the past 8 years has been relatively consistent and always easily recognizable, I have been happy to see the duo continue to expand their palette. Thematically similar to the acoustic ballads of their early years, this song is definitely more of a house party singalong, which is well represented by the aptly themed video.

MS MR is a New York due that is not surprisingly, getting a lot of attention recently. With intense yet airy vocals that dominate the track, a downtempo beat that ties everything together, and hints of strings to keep things interesting, this reminds me of a much better Lana Del Ray. Like what you hear? Check out another track from their Candy Bar Creep Show EP remixed by one of my favorite new producers, Charli XCX and the Twin Shadow remix of "Hurricane."

While I'm not sure how I feel about "YOLO" lip tattoos, drinking motor oil, and burning rubber, I am pretty sure that a lot of people had a lot of fun making this video. Toronto's John O'Regan, aka Diamond Rings, put out a fantastic sophomore effort Free Dimensional last October, and I cannot stop listening to this cut. Really. It's pretty much the first thing I do every morning.

What can I even say about Purity Ring? When I first bought this record, my stereo receiver was shot, meaning the speakers that my record player is routed to were useless, meaning my record player was useless. One would think. I had other plans. I put the record on the turntable and sat on the floor next to it with my ear as close as possible and listened to Shrines front and back. Twice. Case in point. They'll be playing in Atlanta January 17 and I think it might be the best night of my life.

Chaz, you're killing it. This is the brand new video from Chazwick Bundick, aka Toro y Moi, who will be putting out his highly anticipated 4th studio full-length Anything in Return on January 22. Causers of This was one of my favorite records of 2010 and the same goes for Underneath the Pine that came out in 2011, so I'm quite looking forward to this release. Man, 2013 is shaping up to be a damn good year.
